Frightfully Decadent Cupcakes

I brought these into work today.  They vanished quickly.


Devil's Food Cake mix, dark chocolate frosting, orange sprinkles from Target ($1!) Cupcake wrappers and picks from Alin Party Depot.  The Beware Sign - 99 Cent Store.

Creepy Cupcakes

Ok, so you're eating the skeleton's skull... or his brains?!  The bigger question... is this too soon?  Well get ready, because I love the holidays.

A friend sent me this kit and I couldn't resist making them immediately.  They're adorable - particularly the sushi and cheeseburger ones.  You can buy them here: Cupcake Cuties.

Butch Bakery

What do you think of this idea?

Butch Bakery claims to sell manly cupcakes for manly men.  Is this possible?  I thought we had accepted that cupcakes are girly.  When Magnolia Bakery opened on 3rd street last week it was like the second coming, thanks to Sex and the City.  (I'll be the first to admit I've waited in the long line in NY for one of those magical creations!) But how about a cupcake made with beer or bacon?

When David Arrick created Butch Bakery, he was inspired by three things:

1. couldn't afford restaurants after losing his Wall Street job and started cooking

2. saw the long line of people waiting for Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes in the West Village

3. read an article describing the cupcakes as "pink and magical" and it pissed him off

Some of the flavors do look yummy...

Beer Run - chocolate beer cake with beer-infused butter cream topped with crushed pretzels

Mojito - rum-soaked lime cake with mint white-chocolate ganache
Sidecar - brandy-soaked lemon cake with an orange and white chocolate ganache filling

Driller - maple cake topped with crumbled bacon and filled with milk-chocolate ganache

Rum and Coke - rum-soaked Madagascar vanilla cake with cola Bavarian cream

They aren't available in LA yet, but there are plans to start shipping nationwide this year.  The cupcakes are $4.25 each.  I'm not surprised that the vast majority of his clients are women.  He estimates 95%!

Fireworks & Frosting

Since fireworks are outlawed in Los Angeles, I put some safe and shiny sparklers in my cupcakes.  Fluffy coconut softens the tops.  Just made a special delivery to my neighbors and now I'm off to catch some rays poolside!


Vanilla cupcakes, whipped vanilla icing & shredded sweetened coconut.  Sur La Table baking cups, Crate & Barrel sparkle picks.

Happy Hearts Day

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! I love a holiday that celebrates the ones you love... whether it be through a sweet note or an over-the-top gesture of love. Flowers are on their way to my mom... Robert gave me a gift today so I can wear it on V-Day. He picked it out himself & is such perfection I can't stand it.

He mixed together some of my favorite things....

Cupcakes+gold+delicate necklaces+pink sapphires= genius!

Ok, so I didn't really know about pink sapphires before, but sapphires as frosting? Love.

Doesn't the Valentine's Day Owl Snuggly from etsy just beg to be snuggled?

I didn't get a flashy gift last year, so I must be doing something right this time around?

Crumbs Cupcakes

Whether they are trendy or not, I love cupcakes! I tried a new shop after seeing it featured on my station. Lisa Breckenridge was there & it looked so yummy I had to make a pit-stop.

I wasn't disappointed. Robert & I shared the Strawberry Cream Cheese cupcake & we competed to finish it. That's when we know we like something. It's just a few blocks away from Sprinkles. I like that because Sprinkles is always busy & this place wasn't too busy - yet.

My overall favorite is still Frosted Cupcakery in Belmont Shore. The cupcakes are the perfect size and have a well-balanced sweetness.

But in LA, Crumbs is now my fave :)
