Joshua Petker: Between Butterflies

@JoshuaPetker is a romantic. He loves painting beautiful women. He's sometimes shy yet fiercely opinionated and a traditionalist who says thank you more often than necessary because he'd rather err on the side of politeness. This incredible artist is presenting his second solo exhibition Saturday, April 17 and I can't wait.
This is a first look at some of his paintings. Most are already sold. Let's begin with my favorite.

Tricky Treats

On Halloween night I attended Andrew Brandou's solo show at Corey Helford Gallery titled "In the Garden of the Mystic". Some works featured beautiful psychadelic flowers that formed cloud-like rabbits and skulls.

Others showcased innocent little bunnies that looked like they hopped straight out of Little Golden Books and into nightmares.

Since this was Halloween, I received a special treat that I'm giving away to a lucky soul. This poster "Pumpkin Carver" features a delightfully devilish little rabbit who is really enjoying carving jack o' lanterns.

Joshua Petker: In Living Color

My 2nd vlog! My favorite LA artist and now dear friend Joshua Petker gives a preview of his upcoming show and a tour of his new at-home studio! He's self taught and influenced by everything from classical impressionists to old school graffiti artists.

Windows to the Soul

When I first spied Sylvia Ji's work, it instantly made me think of Dia De Los Muertos... Day of the Dead.

She's from San Franscisco and debuted these gorgeous pieces at Corey Helford Gallery this past weekend.

She details her pieces with glitter and gold that give it a modern yet religious feel.

If you have a chance to visit the gallery yourself, walk upstairs to watch the five-minute film that shows her painting her pieces in time-lapse video. She begins with the outline, focuses on the eyes and goes from there.

Dirty Pretty Things

One of his friends, Thomas Han is the guest artist. The title of his series? Dirty Pretty Things.

Dream Escape

Most blogs will be all about Oscar this morning, so I'm posting something different. By the way, I loved Kate Winslet's acceptance speech. I've always loved her. Well deserved!

Onto this show! Natalia Fabia had a smashing opening this weekend at Corey Helford Gallery.

This is Pink. I like her tough attitude. Natalia paints her friends and I think this group might be sisters. At least that's how people were referring to them.The sisters working it in front of their painting. Rightly so. Natalia got in on the action. Love her dress and hair!

Tracking the Wounded

We went to see Joey Remmers' show "Tracking The Wounded" last night at Corey Helford Gallery. The bio says he's inspired by the works of his favorite authors from Stephen King and Chuck Palahniuk to Michael Chabon and Dean Koontz. He grew up in SoCal and he's also a tattoo artist.

An Unfortunate Event

It was a delightful night. I just couldn't resist the title.

On Saturday, I went to Corey Helford Gallery to check out Joshua Petker's art. It was fantastic, but upstairs I spied these works by David Hochbaum and loved the fanciful spirit with a bit of an edge. I immediately thought of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events.

Unfortunately, I don't own any of these pieces.

To me, the film is all about the closing credits. I love the repetitive trance-like music... ooh and the sitar. Not to mention the dark twisted animation. Check it out here.

Joshua Petker

Joshua Petker has a new show opening next weekend at Corey Helford Gallery.

He's a local boy. He grew up in Van Nuys and lives in Silver Lake. Gustav Klimt is one of his big influences, which I love. Here's an excerpt of an interview with him I spied on a blog. Click here for the full interview.

Unfairly or not, women have been used objectively in art for so long that I can paint and feel like I am referencing this objective historic subject all while trying to paint the inner emotions of a person, subjectively. Plus, I am primarily only attracted to art that I consider beautiful, so a beautiful women is an easy subject for me. But, when I say I only like work that is beautiful I should point out my opinion of what is beautiful is definitely artistic and at times ugly.

Fantastic Four

Robert and I went to the Corey Helford Gallery show, "Four" last night. Melissa Forman's work was as lovely as I expected and nearly all were sold. This happens with everyone I like. Do I just have the eye, or what? :)

This is darling artist Melissa Forman, her boyfriend and her work.

A few days before the show, I had inquired about the painting below. She told me it was a present. Look at the resemblance between her BF and the painting.. aha!
(Ok, so she told me it was him.)

There was an Adults Only section, painted to look like a wooden fence with peepholes to view some if Karen Hsaio's work. I'm a lady so I won't disclose what I saw. Go see for yourself.

If I could make a wish right now, I would own the oil painting by Jason Shawn Alexander in the middle. Its heartrending beauty is enchanting.

Korin Faught Debut

Went to Korin Faught's first solo show at the Corey Helford Gallery Saturday night.
I love the glam, dark & somewhat Puritanical feel of her paintings.

She was recently featured on style.com (Vogue's website) and Korin is quite the fashion plate herself. She told me she was wearing LAMB heels & BCBG clothes. Oh & Marc Jacobs purse. Same as my dress!


Saw one of Chris Anthony's works there too... lust!
