Chill Kicks

The best part about the cold weather in Cali is that I can wear tights & boots and stay warm. In Atlanta, my uniform was layers of thermals and snow boots and I was STILL freezing. Plus I looked like the Michelin Man. That was a drag.
When I first saw this photo on Face Hunter, it instantly put me in the mood for the chilly weather and I decided to launch a search for the fantastic boots. Then I clicked on the photo and got a nice surprise. Genius! Now to find shoes and socks like that... hmm.

I was a vegetarian once upon a time. In high school I lasted about a year. So, watch this video already.


I blogged not too long ago about Banksy's peculiar pet shop & I'm posting this video because it is far superior to the one in the past post. Also, the content seems fitting for Halloween.
Here's a quote from Banksy on the exhibit.

"New Yorkers don’t care about art, they care about pets. So I’m exhibiting them instead. I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing. I took all the money I made exploiting an animal in my last show and used it to fund a new show about the exploitation of animals. If its art and you can see it from the street, I guess it could still be considered street art"

My Halloween Costume

First of all, this is my favorite song by Amy Winehouse. I love her insane voice. That's all I'll be saying about insanity. :)

I was going to be Amy last year, but I ended up buying a cop costume at the last minute and wrote tickets as the fashion police. Check out the video here!! (Was it really a year ago?!)

I thought I'd be kind of a classy Amy. I bought a dress today and lots of fake tattoos and have my big bouffant, but then I came across these photos... I'm tempted, oh so tempted to do the tank top and jean shorts. Ain't no mountain high enough...

Blame It On The Rain

I have ash coming out of my ears. I'm covering the SoCal wildfires and they are terrible. I thought rain was the most exhausting type of story to cover and then I stumbled across these photos.

When I cover rain stories, I usually gripe and grumble about having to put on my rain gear. Once it's all on, I'm suddenly splashing around in puddles. It brings out the kid in all of us - especially - ahem - a few talented and sweet photographers named Vic and Eddie.

But as for fires, it always seems to be grueling. Here's to another day hoping no one else loses their home. That is the heartbreaking part. I can't imagine the pain and fear some families are experiencing right now.

I must add, the photos above weren't taken during a serious storm. Trust me. I live in a mudslide-prone canyon. Water can be just as treacherous. Eek.

Banksy Gives Me Goosebumps

Banksy has opened a fake pet shop called the Village Petstore in Greenwich Village. It kind of makes me want to become a vegetarian and kind of makes me hungry.
Fish fingers swim in a fishbowl, Chicken McNuggets with little chick feet dip themselves into barbecue sauce, an Alice In Wonderland style rabbit wears pearls and gazes at her reflection in a looking glass.
My favorite part is the leopard with a surprise reveal. Check it out.

Random Moments In SoCal

In addition to my blackberry and my makeup, a big mirror is one of my essentials at work.

I buy several a month, because I always end up stepping on it, kicking it when I'm moving around or dropping it. You can see the one I have right now has a crack down the middle. I am due for another trip to CVS.

So imagine my enjoyment when I saw my beloved mirror used in the most ingenius way: a sideview mirror. I swear, these mirrors are the best!

An Unfortunate Event

It was a delightful night. I just couldn't resist the title.

On Saturday, I went to Corey Helford Gallery to check out Joshua Petker's art. It was fantastic, but upstairs I spied these works by David Hochbaum and loved the fanciful spirit with a bit of an edge. I immediately thought of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events.

Unfortunately, I don't own any of these pieces.

To me, the film is all about the closing credits. I love the repetitive trance-like music... ooh and the sitar. Not to mention the dark twisted animation. Check it out here.

Joshua Petker

Joshua Petker has a new show opening next weekend at Corey Helford Gallery.

He's a local boy. He grew up in Van Nuys and lives in Silver Lake. Gustav Klimt is one of his big influences, which I love. Here's an excerpt of an interview with him I spied on a blog. Click here for the full interview.

Unfairly or not, women have been used objectively in art for so long that I can paint and feel like I am referencing this objective historic subject all while trying to paint the inner emotions of a person, subjectively. Plus, I am primarily only attracted to art that I consider beautiful, so a beautiful women is an easy subject for me. But, when I say I only like work that is beautiful I should point out my opinion of what is beautiful is definitely artistic and at times ugly.

Don't Forget Your Cardigan

My goodness, I stumbled across this video while - yet again - trying to find the green fairy song from Moulin Rouge on youtube. I think it's the most visually stunning film I have ever seen.

So this video is Carnival by the Cardigans. This was my theme song not that many moons ago. My friend Maesa & I would play it over and over and over again. And then again. And then Pizzicato Five!

It makes me reflect and wonder why I've been obsessed with the 60's for so long? What gives? Watching this video explains it. I would still die to hang out in that retro fab hair salon!

Anyway, the lead singer looks like my gorgeous friend Natasha who just received her pilot's license. Congrats missy!!!

White Boy Where You Going?

Hallelujah! I had the best time at Beck's concert. He was punctual and didn't run three hours late like the last concert I was forced to ditch.

I was on my feet practically the entire time and so was everyone else. What a great crowd. The mood was festive and chill and my company was fantastic. We had a garden box - which seats six - but crammed (snuck) in another two pals to make it nice and cozy.

MGMT was great too. How old are those boys? They seemed so young and fresh.

I'll send you off with one of my favorite Beck songs. It makes me proud of my lovely El Lay and kinda makes me want to hop in a lowrider. It's the perfect song for hydraulics.

8 Snaps of House Ocho

This house is in Carmel, high in the Santa Lucia mountains on a nature preserve. Love the high ceilings, clean lines and big windows that look out to nature. It has a comforting, tucked away feeling because it's built into the hillside.

The home is 3,000 square feet - which is pretty large by LA standards - but it's half the size of other homes in the area. The homeowners are eco-friendly, so they made better use of their outdoor space instead of buiding bigger rooms. I am enamored of the outdoor fireplace and the cool pattern of the concrete courtyard.

Here We Go Again

I am attending another concert. Can you believe it? I must have a death wish.

The last Beck show was cancelled. The last two Jenny Lewis concerts were a bust. (Busts?)

But we have tickets to the Hollywood Bowl tonight to see Beck & MGMT with a bunch of friends, so fingers crossed it's fun. It better be.

Deja Va Va Voom

Here I am chilling with Simba and a guest dog. I like my big dogs ceramic because they don't bark or mess up the furniture. I also don't have to walk them or clean up after them.

Thankfully, Simba has charm.

We had a very exciting photo shoot yesterday. Can't wait to unveil the surprise!

Coco Chanel & Kelly Green

What a sweet little room. I love the soothing, romantic greys and silvers. I love the simple ethereal sheers covering the window behind the bed. I adore the velvet tufted bed and the dark shiny floors. The pattern on the armchair is Kelly Wearstler. I only know this because my barstools are covered in the reverse pattern. It's hard to see, but it's the same fabric used for the bedspread and shams.

I spied this room on coco+kelly's blog. (The name is inspired by Coco Chanel & kelly green... fab!) She is leaving LA to return home to Seattle and I am so sad to lose my beautiful friend who reminds me of Scarlett O'Hara. Yessir, she's that insanely gorgeous.

LA is losing her but she's keeping her home online and I believe opening her own store in Seattle! She's yet to announce the details. Check out her blog in the meantime!

I Saw the Sign

I feel like I had a breakup the other night.

I saw my second Jenny Lewis concert and it was another bust. The last time I couldn't handle standing for hours. This time I had a seat but kept dozing off while waiting. I would perk up for a moment and then start nodding off again. I was just too tired to enjoy it.

The highlight was Tiki Ti.

Of the last dozen times I've passed by the bar, it's been closed. I thought it was a mirage when I saw the lights on. There was parking right out front. At that point it was bad karma to pass it up.

I learned my former favorite drink - the Penang - comes in a more delicious version. The Bayanihan. The only difference is coconut powder. Try it sometime within the next year if they are open again.

America Invades Versailles

Jeff Koons' outrageous pop art creations are on display at the outrageously opulent Château de Versailles.
I love it. I'm tickled that protesters have gathered outside of the chateau saying the works should be moved to Disneyland.
If you are lucky enough to head to Paris, it's free and runs through December 14th.
