I entered a recipe contest at The Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire and WON! I can't believe my recipe is available at this chic hotel at the corner of Wilshire Blvd and across from Via Rodeo, where Presidents have stayed and where Pretty Woman was filmed. Hello!

The task was to create a recipe with blueberries because July is blueberry month. I created pork tenderloin with basil mashed potatoes and blueberry sauce. They brought it to me as a pairing with the chef's dish for the month, a decadent Bison steak with blueberry reduction and diced carrots.

Statement Necklace For a Steal

When I spied this one, I saw the olive stones, the lucite and the crystals hanging like a little chandelier. Cooking with Cactus

Earlier this week, I visited a tiny market on Indiana Avenue right off the 101 freeway that not only had the heartiest meaty tamales, they sold huge bags 2lb bags of fresh cactus for $1.50. I've never cooked with cactus (aka nopales) before, I put the call out and you answered! I whipped up a little omelet with grilled onion and yellow bell peppers topped with lots of tapatio. The only thing missing? Thin slices of jalapeno or serrano chiles to complement the tart, almost pickled flavor of the cactus.

I boiled the cactus in salted water for ten minutes. It kind of looks like green beans, but its slippery like okra.

I sauteed the cactus with the onion and bell pepper in some Pam and a healthy squeeze of lime. I added 3 scrambled egg whites with one whole egg. Quick and easy!

By the way, I had so much leftover pork, I made some yummy open faced pork sandwiches on toasted buns with grilled red onions and the charred pineapple. They were so good I ate two.

Spicy Pineapple Pork Chops

Inspired by a recipe by Rick Bayless for pork tacos (get it here!) I created a meal of pork chops with grilled red onion and pineapple and a side of my grandma's rice.

The marinade is full of chipotle, paprika, and lots of other flavorful ingredients. I bought pork chops and grilled them, but pork loin would be scrumptious too. The recipe calls for achiote paste. I only had seeds, so I made it myself. It wore me out. Get the paste if you can. I'm still scouring supermercados for it.

I marinated the pork chops in the fridge for an hour, but you can marinate overnight for a cured flavor.

I spread out the chops, thick slices of red onion and pineapple on the grill. They cooked for a few minutes on each side and they were done. Easy. I chopped the onion and pineapple on the cutting board before serving, placing the pineapple right on top of the pork

Here is Grandma Ethel's recipe for rice. My little 4'11" grandma grew up in Guaymas Mexico, but we've always called it Spanish rice. Go figure.

2 tbs vegetable oil

2 cups rice

4 cups water

1 tbs caldo de pollo

1 tbs salsa

Heat a pot with two tbs of vegetable oil. Add the rice. Stir until toasted. The rice will starts to turn opaque and a little light brown on the edges. Add 4 cups water with the the caldo de pollo. Stir. Add the salsa. Cook the water down until the water nearly meets the rice. Stirring occasionally so the rice doesn't stick.

Cover, turn down the heat to low and let cook for 20 minutes. After 20 min, take a wooden spoon and turn the rice. If it's not fluffy, recover with the lid and cook for a few more minutes.

Let me show you why you need Caldo de Pollo and why regular chicken bouillon doesn't give you the same result. (Because I ran out of it and was forced to use bouillon and it just wasn't the same!)

Check out the rich, reddish brown color to your left. The flavors are that much richer too. The yellow bouillon to the right just doesn't cut it.

But I'm never one to turn down a home cooked meal! A handful of cilantro made up for my sins. Enjoy!

Recipe: Pasta Primavera

This is the perfect recipe for spring! The original recipe calls for fava beans, but they're only in season late spring and summer. I bought dried and they weren't nearly as good as fresh soybeans.

Pasta Primavera with Soybeans and Mint
Recipe for two

- Ingredients -

1/2 lb fettucine
1/4 C. extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
16 asparagus spears, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cup fresh soybeans . fava beans, shelled
1 cup fresh or frozen peas thawed
1 cup red onion, julienned
3 tbs butter
1/4 cup of white wine
salt and pepper to taste
2 tbs fresh chopped mint
3/4 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese

- Process -

Boil a large pot of salted water. Cook pasta for approximately 8 minutes, or until al dente. Reserve 2 cups of cooking liquid before draining water. After draining, keep pasta warm in pot, toss with 1 tbs of olive oil so pasta doesn't stick.

While pasta is cooking, heat olive oil in a sauté pan. When hot, add garlic and cook until fragrant. Add asparagus, soybeans, peas, and onion, and cook for one minute. Add butter and wine, 1 tsp each of salt and pepper. When you add the two cups cooking liquid from pasta, reduce by ½ to thicken sauce. When sauce is desired consistency, add pasta to sauce and toss with 1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese. Taste for seasoning, add salt or pepper if needed and transfer pasta to warmed plates. Sprinkle fresh mint and remaining cheese over each plate of pasta.

New Zodiac Chart!

Okay, when I first posted this, I was perplexed by the chart. Hours after posting this, I talked to astrologers & numerologists who said the horoscope we see in the newspaper and in most books is the western form of astrology. This form is based on the seasons and doesn't change. The new zodiac chart with the new sign pertains to the form of astrology that is based on the constellations, because the earth has moved and that's what changed the date.

In other words, I was a Virgo, and while I love Leos and now it says I am one, I still feel like a Virgo! Whatever makes you happiest I believe. xo

Candyland in Tinseltown

I am beyond excited for Will Cotton's solo exhibition at The Michael Kohn Gallery. The opening is tomorrow, but the show will continue through Valentine's Day.
I've adored him for years, but just about died when his paintings were brought to life in Katy Perry's California Gurls video. He's also very hands on. He makes all of the delicious fashions for his models, including the candy crown and foil cupcake wrapper dress you see on Katy.

Doesn't that wedding cake hat look good enough to eat? A walk through the gallery would be the perfect way to spend Valentine's Day, don't you think?

Lucky Little Lady in the City of Light

My loves, I am beyond excited to announce a new adventure. I have been blogging at this site for nearly four years now. My first post was February 14th, 2007!

My blog has always been intensely personal. I believe in sharing ideas, getting feedback and learning from other women. My first blogs were about my favorite artists and designs, as I was decorating my home, but the blog has grown to be so much more over the past few years.

I purchased the http://www.lawoman.com/ domain a while ago, thrilled to discover a site that spoke to me. I'm a gal who grew up in LA with posters of Jim Morrison on her walls, now living on Love Street, steps away from Jim's old cottage in Laurel Canyon. While I have a low-key side, I also love classic glamour and restraint. I pored over beauty and etiquette books from the 50's during high school and still admire Audrey Hepburn's style above all others. Since we're sharing secrets, I confess: Disneyland brings me the same excitement as a trip to Tiffany and Co. The escape! I'm a hopeless dreamer.

While I knew I'd be posting on this fabulous new domain, I always knew LA Woman would be bigger than one person. I am inspired by Sex and the City because I could relate to each character on the show in different ways. Look past the incredible wardrobe and their outrageous adventures, I related to their struggles and friendships that outlasted disagreements. Too bad there aren't more shows like that. I love a reality show, but I'm over shows focused on gals trashing each other, catfights, bitchiness, etc.

I created this new site with friends who all have impeccable taste, yet everyone has a unique style and voice. They make me laugh, inspire me, make me think, and make me want more out of this life. I hope you enjoy all of our thoughts, ideas and musings.

The new site will launch close to my four year blogging anniversary, with lots of romantic, decadent, sweet things. We'll all be sick of our New Year's resolutions by that time anyway, won't we?

Stripes Forever

I love a stripe. I wore one sweater to bits a couple of years ago and I still miss it. The cotton long-sleeved tee was from the Gap, had light grey and white stripes and was the softest sweater I ever owned. I lived in that shirt, so it practically became a member of the family. Naturally, it acquired a nickname. Stripey was my go-to shirt when I wanted to get cozy. An unoriginal name and a bit on the crazy side, but hey, I get attached to things. Robert still gives me a look when I'm checking out something with stripes.

Stripes are big right now and without anchors and rope they are classic and chic. My inspiration is the outfit at top left. Black tights and boots are kind of my staple. I love the big loose shirt tucked into jean shorts.

Check out the Sonia Rykel dress at top right. It's chic and comfy, but costs $425. Move to the dress in the middle of page. It has a similar square neckline, but only costs $20 at Forever 21.

Recipe: Whoopie Pie

If you like moon pies, brownies and oreo filling, this recipe is for you. According to some food historians, Amish women would occasionally put one of these treats into their husbands' lunchboxes. When farmers found the sweet surprise, they'd shout "whoopie!" I know that's how I felt when my mom left me a Ding Dong. She always made us fantastic lunches, with fresh sliced turkey on whole wheat bread and the lettuce and tomato in separate baggies. Ding Dongs went against her grain, but we loved them.

I'm posting the traditional recipe for whoopie pies. It involves Crisco. Maybe you don't like using shortening. You can substitute a stick of butter, but the filling will run. A healther alternative is to use only marshmallow fluff, which is very sticky. Whipping cream works too, but it must be eaten immediately.

Since whoopie pies take two steps, you can make the cakes a day or two in advance. Store them in an airtight container separated by wax paper. Like most cookies, they freeze well too. Just pop them into ziploc bags and let them defrost at room temp.

Whoopie Pies

Ingredients:

- Cakes -

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder

1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup well-shaken buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 large egg

- Filling -

1 jar of Marshmallow fluff

1 1/4 cup shortening (aka Crisco)

1 cup powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla

Process:

- Making cakes -

Preheat oven to 350°F.
Whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt in a bowl until combined. Stir together buttermilk and vanilla in a small bowl.

Beat together butter and brown sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes in a standing mixer or 5 minutes with a handheld, then add egg, beating until combined well. Reduce speed to low and alternately mix in flour mixture and buttermilk in batches, beginning and ending with flour, scraping down side of bowl occasionally, and mixing until smooth.

Spoon 1/4-cup mounds of batter about 2 inches apart onto 2 buttered large baking sheets. Bake in upper and lower thirds of oven, switching position of sheets halfway through baking, until tops are puffed and cakes spring back when touched, 11 to 13 minutes. Transfer with a metal spatula to a rack to cool completely.

- Making filling -

In a mixer beat the fluff and shortening together until fluffy. Slowly add sugar, then vanilla. Blend until incorporated then spread a 1/2 inch think layer of frosting on one cake. Assemble with another half. Done! :)

Making Whoopie

Here's a glance at my whoopie pies straight from the oven. They are delicious, but I don't think it's worth it to buy heart-shaped molds. This batter has a mind of its own. You're fine using a baking sheet.

These Manolos aren't cheap ($1K!) so in my dreams, I imagine wearing them with a chic little LBD or glamming them up with a silver or cream shift.

It's hard to match the original, but Martinez Valero makes the prettiest pair for about a tenth of the price ($130). For a tenth of that price, you can buy this sweet little ink drawing for $12!

Fashion Takes Flight

Beautifully Basic Bruschetta

I love making bruschetta when I know I'll be cooking for a few hours. If I cook while hungry, I grow impatient for the recipe to be finished. This appetizer is fun, quick to make and will tide you over until the main course.

- Ingredients -for 2-4 people (double it for a party)

3 tomatoes
1/2 fresh baguette
1tbs olive oil
2tbs balsamic vinegar
fresh basil - I forgot mine, but had dried. Fresh is much better!
salt and pepper to taste

- Process -

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Parboil your tomatoes to loosen the skins. Boil the tomatoes for one minute, then put in an ice bath for another minute. Make small slice in the skin and they peel off easily in water.
Cube the tomatoes and place in a mixing bowl.
Combine with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and chopped basil. Salt and pepper to taste.
Slice bread at an angle, about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Brush each piece on one side with olive oil. Place bread on baking sheet with olive oil side down.
Bake for 4-5 minutes, Edges should be light brown.
When the bread is toasted, flip over your pieces, spoon on dollop of your tomatoes. Finish with fresh Parmesan on top. Enjoy!

Lunch at The Chateau

Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere" features a movie star living at the Chateau Marmont (showing his daughter the time of her life) and celebrates the hotel's historic Hollywood vibe. If these walls could talk! Scarlett Johansson and Benicio del Toro's steamy tryst in the elevator is just a drop in the well. Led Zeppelin riding motorcycles through the hotel lobby? Oh yes. Judy Garland singing at the piano? Indeed. Lindsay Lohan racking up huge bills and Britney Spears smearing food on her face? Sigh.

I love going for lunch. The patio is like a (very glamorous) neighbor's outdoor room, with massive rugs laid out in a serene, bohemian garden. It's also some of the best people-watching in LA and the food never disappoints. I've had the Cucumber and Avocado with Basil sandwich a half-dozen times over the past few months. With more than a dozen layers of goodies to bite into, the textures are incredible.

I guess we're both creatures of habit. Robert usually gets the chicken breast and avocado sandwich. (Don't you love a pounded chicken breast?) I stole too many of his fries. They're just how I like them. Goldilocks here doesn't like her fries too skinny or too fat. Just crispy and light as air. Maybe you've heard of the Chateau's burger? It's one of the best in LA. I prefer sharing one with a friend after a rowdy Hollywood night, tucked into a couch in the main living room.

Just One Sip

I first tried a French 75 at The Savoy in London after learning that's where the drink came to fame. The hotel's American Bar also served up London's first cocktail in 1889.

On another note, if you haven't tasted brandied cherries, let me assure you they won't remind you of sugary Shirley Temples. Just one sip and I'm transported!

French 75

1/2 oz simple syrup

1/2 oz fresh lemon juice

1 1/2 oz gin

3 brandied cherries for garnish

lemon twist for garnish

- makes 1 drink -

In an ice-filled pilsner or collins glass, combine the syrup, lemon juice, and gin, and stir to mix. Fill the glass to the top with champagne and garnish with the cherries and lemon twist.

The hotel was renovated recently for about $200 million. I'd love to return and pay homage to the hotel's Hollywood history with a decadent outfit inspired by one of my favorite fizzy cocktails. The Savoy was Marilyn Monroe's favorite place to stay. There's a suite named after Marlene Dietrich that comes with a dozen pink roses, which she insisted upon for every stay. It's a magical place. Gordon Ramsay runs The Savoy Grill and I'm sure he bites his tongue.

Snow Valley

On Sunday, snow fell in The Santa Clarita Valley for the first time in two decades.

I'm heading to the snow. I'll be honest with you. This California girl hates being cold. But these fabulous Chanel creations are warming my heart.

French Toast Waffles

Inspired by an episode of Bobby Flay, who presented how to make Peanut Butter French Toast Waffles with Mixed Berry Sauce.

If you have a belgian waffle maker, this is simple to make, but you could make french toast in a skillet too.

Ingredients:

Sliced bread. (I used a regular healthy loaf from Trader Joe's, but a big fluffy loaf of egg bread would be wonderful)
3 eggs
3/4 cup milk
1 tbs vanilla extract
1 tbs cinnamon
non-stick cooking spray, like Pam

Process:

Whisk together the wet ingredients, let the bread soak completely for about three minutes, spray your waffle maker or skillet, cook for three minutes on the maker or on each side of a skillet.
Serve how you like. This morning I sprinkled confectioner's sugar right out of the box because it's raining and I'm sleepy, then poured over syrup. If you're feeling fancy, the mixed berry sauce from Bobby Flay's recipe sounds delicious.

2:30am: Take this photo with my new reindeer Ruth, who keeps getting upset because I keep mistaking her for a moose and picking her soft little nose.

3:30am: Tuck into bed with kitties lying on my legs.

8:00am: Wake up to the sound of drilling on my home.

8:15am: Hear a guy yelling about phones being down.

9:00am: More drilling.

1:00pm: Wake up again.

5:00pm: Walk to Bristol Farms.

8:00pm: Prepare homemade bruschetta and pasta primavera while watching The Twilight Zone marathon.

Oh happy, languid day.

A Taste of Red Medicine

I'm not a restaurant critic, but I love going out to eat and I want honest recommendations. Consider this a conversation between friends.

Even though @koreanyenta and I have been complaining about not being able to fit into any of our dresses, we've heard so much talk about Red Medicine, we wanted to see what the fuss was about. The diet can wait another day.

This is the where a restaurant critic was photographed and ordered to leave. Her photo was posted online so “restaurants can have a picture of her and make a decision as to whether or not they would like to serve her." Those are the words of restaurant manager Noah Ellis. I'm a reporter, and just like all other reporters, I'm inquisitive, particularly when there's controversy. My mouth was watering in every sense of the saying.

The name Red Medicine may seem a bit strange, but it was inspired undoubtedly by Fugazi's punk album of the same name. The restaurant had a warm and almost casual vibe when I walked through the door. In fact, I felt more like I was in Silver Lake rather than Beverly Hills.It's decked out with high ceilings, industrial decor, handsome young men wearing checkered shirts and a hostess walking around with a big friendly smile. Good thing I was wearing jeans and a blazer. The dress I had tried unsuccessfully to sausage myself into not only would've been uncomfortable, I would've felt a bit overdressed.

We were seated promptly (by Noah possibly?) and I considered ordering the #33 cocktail ($10). I have a weakness for Tiki-inspired rum drinks and this was described as a Singapore Sling. We asked the waiter for recommendations and went for two #18s, after he asked what I normally drink.

A few minutes later, we were sipping on two drinks that tasted deliciously yet suspiciously like rum punch. We were halfway through the cocktails (we were thirsty!) when our waiter arrived with two more drinks. Uh oh. Apparently we were drinking another table's Singapore Slings. He left us our #18s (kind of a twist on a lemon drop), but I'm all for happy accidents. I ordered another #33 later!

For appetizers we ordered the crispy spring rolls ($16), brussels sprouts ($9), and chicken dumplings ($9). The crispy spring roll ($16) may seem a bit pricey for what tasted like fancy egg rolls, but I loved it! As for the brussels sprouts, flash frying them seems to be the thing these days. I had some at Cleo the other night. Try them if you've never had them before, but be warned they're a little salty and oily and they're supposed to be that way.

The chicken dumplings resembled meatballs and were fun to assemble into lettuce wraps, but I could've gone for less meat and more greens to better balance out the flavors. If my husband was with me, he probably would've disagreed. He loves big portions of meat. On this note, I can't help but share the first time I had chicken lettuce wraps. It was at the French-Vietnamese restaurant Le Colonial. It used to be on Robertson and may it rest in peace. I went there when I was in college and when they brought them to the table I was confused but pressed through, putting a little dollop of the tangy, peppery meat on my plate and then plucking a a leaf of lettuce when I was finished with my portion, thinking it was there to cleanse the palate. The memory makes me laugh every time I order them.

For main courses we ordered the pintade fermier ($12), which was a delicious piece of chicken that arrived with white rice in separate pot. The blue lantern bay scallops ($18) were perfect with a hint of lemon and butter, but the tiny new potatoes tasted strong, like lemon butterballs. The two entrées did not fill us up (I'll order more next time) so we were eager to order dessert.

We ordered the lemongrass pots de creme ($9) because our server raved about it. It had a big dollop of blended sweet potato and a variety of other things on top, but the custard underneath is the prize. The bitter chocolate ($9) involved fluffy chocolate kisses dancing across a pile of cookie crumbles. The desserts were a bit fussy for my taste, but I have to mention here that Jordan Kahn was a pastry chef at Per Se in New York and did some incredible desserts at XIV before opening this restaurant.

With tip, we spent $100 per person for dinner and drinks. (We were not charged for the accidental delivery.) I am over the moon for their cocktails and it would be fun to return and sit in the bar, where I can eat more spring rolls and order off the lounge menu. All of their bread comes from Bouchon, where dinner is always worth spending $100 a person.

The Last Supper

What will be your final dinner of 2010? No matter how eager you are to say goodbye, please don't do it with cheese, crackers and a cheap bottle of champagne. Pay your final respects to the year (and protect yourself from a hangover) with a hearty meal before you pop the champers. I promise you'll be in heaven ushering in 2011.

I make this meal at home all of the time. It may seem rich, but I never feel weighed down afterward. The secret is the boiled spinach! If you want a more decadent version, saute the spinach with a bit of olive oil and shallots.

New Year's Eve Menu

Filet Mignon with Cracked Peppercorns
Fluffy Mashed Potatoes
Flash Boiled Spinach

What you will need for two servings:

Two 4-6oz cuts of filet mignon - Trader Joe's sells them in pairs
4 russet potatoes
6 cups of spinach - fill up a plastic bag at the market or buy a ready to serve bag
Worcestershire Sauce
red wine
garlic powder
Lawry's seasoning salt
whole peppercorns
salt
1tbs butter
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup milk
paprika
A loaf of crusty bread if you love your carbs like me

1. Marinate the steaks in the dish they came in or a bowl. Sprinkle 2 tbs of Worcestershire sauce, 2tbs of red wine, 1tsp garlic powder and 1tsp Lawry's seasoning salt over the steaks. Place 2 tbs of whole peppercorns onto a cutting board, crush with the underside of a skillet and sprinkle half the pepper on the steaks. Save the rest of the pepper for later, when we'll pepper the other side.

2. While your meat is marinating, peel and quarter the potatoes, throw them in a pot, cover with water and 1tbs salt. They'll cook in about 15 minutes.

3. While your potatoes are boiling, heat a skillet over medium heat. Add 1tbs of olive oil. Saute meat with peppercorn side down for 4-5 minutes. While it's cooking, you'll repeat what you did for your marinade on the other side. Sprinkle 2 tbs of Worcestershire sauce, 2tbs of red wine, 1tsp garlic powder, 1tsp Lawry's seasoning salt over the steaks and finish with the rest of the crushed peppercorns. Flip and cook for another 4-5 minutes.

4. Turn on your broiler. Heat a big pot of water for your spinach.

5. Place the steaks on a cooking sheet, broil for 3-4 minutes.

6. Take out steaks, cover with foil and let them rest.

7. Check your potatoes. If they are soft, (feathering at the edges and fall apart when pierced with a fork) drain all of the water, mash with a potato masher in the pot, then add 1tbs butter. Mash the butter until it's melted, then add 1/4 cup of milk, 1/4 cup sour cream and 1tsp salt. Mash and whip together. Taste the potatoes and if it tastes a bit bland, add sour cream by the dollop and salt sparingly to taste. Trust your tastebuds! :) Cover your potatoes and get ready to cook the spinach.

7. When your pot of water is boiling, add all of the spinach (it will cook down) and boil for two minutes, then pour through a colander to remove the water.

8. Now it's time to plate your dish!

Dollop a hearty amount of potatoes onto your plate. Sprinkle with pepper and paprika.

Make sure your spinach isn't dripping water, or squeeze it out with your slotted spoon, then place on your plate. A sprinkle of salt and pepper will bring out the natural flavors.

Place your beautiful steaks on the plate and enjoy with a glass of your favorite red wine!

Do you like my shelf of mashed potatoes? I love scooping them up with crusty bread. Talk about carb overload. Heavenly!

It's the girliest, prettiest thing. Unfortunately, the price tag made me choke on my morning espresso - $690. These other options still have that feminine touch I'm looking for:

1. Forever 21 Jeweled Bow Pumps: $25.80. Velvet heel with a crystal bow in the right place.
2. Martinez Valero Carolina Pump: $69.95. Pom poms make me want to kick up my heels!

With 2011 just a few days away, I am eager for what's around the corner. I live for anticipation. I love having something to look forward to!

What do I have on my list so far? Learn more recipes, take professional cooking lessons, host more dinner parties, travel out of the country, work on my home and show more kindness. Two other special things on my list are relaunching my blog and volunteering to help elephants.

For inspiration, I love a quote from one of my best girlfriends, Nina: "Less talk. More walk."

While we can fill afternoons talking about hopes and dreams, what are we doing to make them happen? Since we can't do everything at once, that's why lists are great. It's satisfying to cross things off and prepare for the next adventure.

Here's to living this year to the fullest! I anticipate bumps and bruises along the way. Each risk means a success or failure, but whether it's tears or celebration, isn't that what makes life worth living?

The Beverly Hillbillies

Look what my husband brought home. It's from an estate that's being torn down in Holmby Hills to make room for a McMansion. It's a loss for the neighborhood, but a score for us! (How did he avoid getting pulled over?)

It's in the backyard now. I don't know what we'll do with it yet. Will it be part of a gazebo? Perhaps we'll paint it and place it behind our bed. The possibilities are endless.

My Favorite Gift

My mom surprised me with a priceless gift this Christmas - a serving dish owned by my Granny. It sat on her kitchen counter in Arkansas. Granny loved sweets. She drank Coca Cola from glass bottles and sent us to bed with a stick of Juicy Fruit gum.

Granny didn't have an alarm clock in the house. She'd get up before the rest of us and wake up everyone with the scent of bacon, eggs and her heavenly drop biscuits.

For Christmas, I paid homage to her with a pile of sweets. My dad picked up the Mexican pastries and I made chocolate Day of the Dead skulls from a mold picked up on Olvera Street.

DIY: Holiday Gift Basket

Christmas Night

I'm so full of happiness with Simba by the fireplace, a glass of wine in my hand and @RobertD3 by my side. I had lots of family over today, ate too much food, celebrated a birthday and had a ball.

Earlier, I was wearing a belt and stilettos. That belt is history and my feet are tucked into cozy Uggs I've worn since high school.

I'm winding down, listening to the rain fall through the trees, the hum of the dishwasher and the crackle of the fire. I'm at peace.

I love the idea of a Cuban Christmas! My family always eats tamales for good luck. As for flan, I have the best pumpkin flan recipe. Click here for the recipe and video. If you don't want to use indiviidual cups, you can pour it into an 8 inch flan pan. Black beans and rice are simple sides - don't forget the sour cream! But if you serve them with fried plantains, it takes the meal to another level. Plus, they're so easy to make. Recipe below!

Fried Plantains

Peel a bunch of ripe plantains - or banana - then slice at an angle longways.
Heat about an inch of vegetable oil in frying pan.
Once it's hot (when you drip in a bit of water it sizzles), fry on both sides until golden brown.
Remove from pan and let the oil drain on a paper towel. Sprinkle with a little salt.
Cilantro too, if you like it. I love it.
Wrap up in fresh paper towels and go!

Festive Feliz Navidad

My cozy guest bedroom turned vibrant and playful with shiny metallic garland and trees.

A sweet little bull pinata. He reminds me of Ferdinand, stopping to smell the flowers.

I had planned to place my candy bar at the entry, but with the rain, the entry became a mud room. Moving the treats upstairs was the smartest decision of the evening, because it became the coat/candy room!

I covered the Christmas tree with tin and handmade ornaments, loteria cards and small sombreros.

I've been to two baby showers in the past few weeks, one of my dearest friends is pregnant and a few are hoping to be soon, so I have babies on the brain!

This gorgeous bedding is by Caden Lane, and I saw it on the beautiful shelter.

I love the colors (always a weakness for Tiffany blue, and the blood red bows look so chic tied along the crib. Seriously, the bows would look gorgeous with any bedding and it's something you could do yourself. Just buy a spool of satin ribbon and get to practicing people!

My Little Black Lanvin

I still can't believe it. I just scored this Lanvin for H&M dress in black. I was shopping at the Sunset Plaza location this morning and spied a rack of voluminous frocks that outshone the rest. When an outrageous shoulder ruffle winked at me, I grabbed the dress and saw it was my size. That's when I looked over my shoulder to see if I was being punked.

The adorable salesboy tells me they've had a flood of returns lately - undoubtedly from gals who wore it once and returned it. Bless those girls for paying it forward. Now I have the perfect party dress. Onto the shoes!

Doilies Aren't Dead

My grandmother gave me about 20 doilies that her grandmother (who was blind) had made. They are beautifully made, incredibly detailed and intricate. But I’m 27 and even in 27 more years I just can’t imagine a use for a collection of antique doilies. She put hers under potted plants. Any suggestions on how to make these doilies hip and stylish?

These beautiful treasures are just begging to be shown off in a bright, sunny room! I can just imagine your great great grandmother soaking in the sunlight, crocheting each stunning piece. My grandmother crocheted hers too and they're so special to me. Below are some of the most creative and current ideas I've found.

How about making a few of the small doilies into starched doily bowls?

To shape a bowl, soak a doily in liquid starch, squeeze out excess, and place doily over an inverted glass bowl covered in waxed paper. Dry one to three days, depending on humidity.

You have plenty of doilies to make a pair of pillows.

Cookies & Cocktails

I had a little holiday baking party with Jaime and Michel (@JRummerfield and @MrDentalHygiene) to prepare for my holiday festivities.

Sure, we made cookies, but this baking party was less about perfect baking and more about eating what wasn't burnt and a little champagne-fueled merry making.

Despite what the package of Easy Squeeze frosting says, it is not ready to use. It doesn't come with any tips!

The frosting was spread the old fashioned way - with a knife.

The cookies turned out pretty cute anyway... lots of character! ;) Michel made the snowman in the center, I decorated the snowmen on the sides and Jaime created the holly.

For this champagne cocktail, we coated the rims in green and red sugar after a dip in light corn syrup to keep it in place. A sprinkle of fresh pomegranate seeds gives the champers a tart pop when you sip.

Perfect Grilled Cheese

Here's how I make a perfect grilled cheese, with a few influences from the Grilled Cheese Truck. After a tour from Michele Grant, I learned how they make their incredible Cheesy Mac and Rib, which features macaroni and cheese with sharp cheddar, BBQ pork and caramelized onions.

Psst... a secret. They use a thin layer of mayo to take this sandwich to the next level. If I had more time, I'd add mac and cheese and pulled pork to this sandwich, but usually the caramelized onions are enough.

Ingredients for two:

First, saute 1/4 cup of chopped onions in a dash of olive oil and sprinkle of salt and pepper. If you have an open bottle of white wine, add a splash too.

Using fluffy bread (I used 45 calorie Sara Lee wheat bread for the photo) spread room temperature butter over one side of the bread and then spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on top.

Lay one slice of bread with the butter/mayo side down, then a slice of cheese, then layer of grilled onions, then another slice of cheese and then top with the other side of bread.

Grill for two minutes on each side, then dig in. Prepare the other sandwich for a friend or enjoy the second if you're really hungry!

Magical Mantle

I've been looking for ideas for my mantle and when I saw this one I was inspired instantly! It definitely has a fashion influence, with the garland hanging like necklaces and long ribbons tied at different spots.
This is Sherri Shepherd's home, decorated by Michael Russo on HGTV's Celebrity Holiday Homes.
She hosted a Christmas In Harlem party, with lots of gold decor (down to the cocktails) and jazz musicians played while everyone mingled. It was tres chic.

They demonstrated how to make oversized ornaments for less, using a round balloon and ribbon.
1. Blow up a gold balloon
2. Tie a big white ribbon around it (I'm sure tape helps it stay in place.)
3. Attach some string.
They attached a magnet to the top of the string so it can hang from a metal source. Nice tip.

Christmas In Hollywood

Leave it to Slim Aarons to take the most decadent and playful Christmas photo ever.

I'd love to spend Christmas day floating in the water. The photo was taken in 1954. Slim's wife, Rita, lounges on a raft in her swimsuit. Who needs jewelry when you're surrounded by shiny ornaments?

But the tree! The Christmas tree planted in the shallow end is about as tall (taller?) than their home. I can't even imagine how they decorated it all the way to the top.

The Hollywood sign in the distance? Swoon.

My Christmas Card

Do you love it? It's based on the famous "Keep Calm and Carry On" WWII poster commissioned by the British government, meant to help provide a sense of calm during uncertain times.

I've seen this poster in countless homes, but it's a bit too serious for the walls of Casa Marques. I do think it's the perfect cheeky greeting for the holiday season. Peace!

Tres Leches Cake

Tres Leches Cake

This cake is for milk lovers, made with three milks and three layers. Don't even ask about calorie count. This cake is rich, but it's a wonderfully fluffy Mexican dessert, especially during the holidays. I separated the recipe by layers...

First Layer: Sponge Cake

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 tbs baking powder
2 tsp ground cinnamon
4 eggs, separated
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup milk

Second Layer: Milk Syrup
1 can evaporated milk (12 oz.)
1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz.)
1 1/4 cups whole milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Top layer: Whipped cream
1 1/2 cups whipping cream
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

Sponge Cake:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour cake pan, and line with parchment paper. Sift flour with baking powder and cinnamon. Using a standing mixer with the whisk attachment, beat egg whites until frothy and add sugar slowly to help whites reach stiff peaks. This is an important step to keep the cake light. Add your yolks one at a time, then slowly add the flour mixture and the milk.

Pour batter into pan and bake for 40 minutes. It should be springy to the touch. Let cool to room temperature.

Milk Syrup:

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Whip thoroughly with a wire whisk and refrigerate until the cake cools. When the cake is cooled, carefully poke holes in the cake with a fork, pour the milk syrup over the top of the cake.

Topping:

Whip whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla together until soft peaks form. Spread over the top of cake. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon over the top, or even top with fresh blueberries or strawberries to give it a tart twist!

When you cut the cake, it will have milk hanging out in the dish. Do not be alarmed. This is the nature of the dish. :) Hope you enjoy!

What makes this table so chic (the decor goes without saying) is the variety of treats - a feast for the eyes! And since they're displayed in small quantities, everything looks more special. Scarcity breeds desire!

My holiday spread will have lots of sweet macaroons and pastries, and since I'm giving my holiday a latin twist, I've been practicing my Mexican chocolate mousse and tres leches cake. Once they're perfected, I'll share the recipes with you!

DIY: Gold Glittered Ornaments

Buy yourself some gold spraypaint, gold glitter and big shiny ornaments.

Right after spraying each ornament, I dusted the tops with glitter (before they dried.) If they dry, just spray them again and sprinkle!

The dull gold contrasted with a dusting of sparkly glitter makes them oh so glam!

Took me less than ten minutes. Just let them dry before hanging. xo

I Want Candy!

A wreath on the front door sets the holiday mood, but for my Christmas party, I want a little surprise once my friends open the door. Is there anything more fun than a candy buffet? It will set a playful mood as guests enter my home and give them a sweet treat as they go.

I've discovered the most beautiful candy ribbons, peppermint pillows and big lollipops at Hammond's Candy Store.

Martha Stewart's recipe for Lemon-Thyme Potato Gratin is the most irresistible potato dish. It disappeared once my family got a taste. This comes from a girl who eats mashed potatoes with everything. Get the recipe here.

Christian Louboutin's red soles make me feel festive!

Basting the most delicious bird ever. I did a chipotle rub with cilantro, thyme, flat leaf parsley, & chipotle peppers. Cooked at 350 for 3 hours. Perfect.

Did I sneak a slice while carving? Possibly.

It's an intense undertaking.

Dressing, green beans and salad, check. @Robertd3 is looking at me like, "hurry up."

Dad smells something. He's been known to sneak a bite too.

Aren't the turkey and the potato gratin gorgeous?

Every cook's favorite part (aside from someone offering to do dishes) is serving everyone.

When my family chows down without talking to each other, it's a sure sign they like the food.

White dishes and linens and a piece of plywood. Perfect for a backyard or a beach house. I admit I love the look. The gorgeous arrangements make the table look chic and crisp. I am getting so excited to roll up my sleeves and get cooking this Thanksgiving!

Seasons greetings lovelies. My Christmas tree is up, in my annual tradition of putting it up way before Thanksgiving. While it's decked out in gorgeous red and gold, it is definitely missing something. That something is black ornaments. They bring a glamorous edge to my trees. I've made most of my black ornaments in the past (because they're so hard to find), but Olvera Street had just what I needed!

These shiny tin hearts scream passion!

I like the glittered skulls but picked up miniature pinatas instead. I'd spray all of these skulls gold so they're not so Dia de Muertos.

These little sombreros hang easily as ornaments. I'm inspired by the glorious wall of dancing hats at Velvet Margarita in Hollywood!

A wall of crosses is perfect for Christmas if you're not up for a manger. I've always wanted a life-sized manger for my front yard so I could put baby Jesus in his crib as Christmas Eve turns into Christmas. (Fears of a stolen baby Jesus are why I haven't already.)

I love the pairing of an Italian fashion house with an American clothing retailer, but this line isn't going to be available in the United States. It makes no sense to me. If you live/shop in London, Paris or Milan, you're set.

When I was a child, Adventureland and the The Enchanted Tiki Room cast a spell on me, so I've never met a Tiki Bar I didn't like. Damon's on Brand in Glendale is a must if you're a fanatic like me or just crave a hearty 60's style dinner.

There are only two drinks listed on the menu. They're $6. One is the Chi Chi and it tastes like a pina colada, so I went for the Mai Tai. Unless you're a lush, you only need to order one. It's delicious, but strong!

My Thanksgiving Menu

Ever wonder where I get my je ne sais quoi? That certain something comes from my mother. This Southern belle was Homecoming Queen, in the Glee Club, a cheerleader and moved to Los Angeles after graduating from high school. She met my dad at the drive-in and married my Mexican/Portuguese daddy because he didn't look like any of the boys from back home and he was a charmer too.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, momma rules the roost. Don't worry, when Christmas rolls around, I'm all about tamales, tres leches and all of that latin flavor! Sadly, there aren't enough Southern restaurants here in LA and it's the epitome of comfort food. There's a reason when I met Paula Deen I felt like I was running into a long lost relative. She acted the same way. LOVE Southern hospitality.

Here's my working menu for next week. Input is welcome.

Roast Turkey
Aunt Diane's chicken and cornbread dressing (this is non-negotiable. best stuffing/dressing ever)
Cranberry Sauce
Mashed/Scalloped Potatoes/Potatoes Gratin... which?
Homemade or Instant rolls, depending on the time I have.
Baked sweet potatoes with brown sugar and butter
Pumpkin Pie. Always.
Turnip greens/sauteed spinach or gasp! green bean casserole

I never tried green bean casserole until a few years ago. My mother always turned up her nose to "entrees" fixed with Cream of Mushroom soup. I had green bean casserole at a boyfriend's house and thought it was the most delicious thing I had ever tasted. You should've seen my mother's face. Priceless! But I still love it to this day!

Thanksgiving Tabletop

Here's a sneak peek at my look for Thanksgiving, inspired by this photo.

I couldn't resist a mockup on my dining table, even though I'll be cooking and serving dinner at my parents' home. My mother's dining room is pale green (like mother, like daughter) and I think I'll have to steal this look for my home too.

Aren't these flower arrangements insane? @JRummerfield worked her magic and made these fabulous creations. The orange just sets the table on fire!

Capellini Pomodoro

This is such an easy recipe. Don't tell anyone and pretend you spent forever over the stove. It's beautiful, healthy and impressive to serve.

This takes about 10 minutes to make. Hallelujah.

What you need:

1/3 cup olive oil

1 tbs crushed garlic

1 package (12 oz) cappelini aka angel hair pasta

1 lb roma tomatoes

1/4 tsp black pepper

1 cup fresh chopped basil

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

You need two pots. Start heating one pot with boiling water for your pasta. Chop your tomatoes, then heat olive oil in a pan with crushed garlic. Once it starts to pop, add your chopped tomatoes and pepper, stir and cover. Start chopping your basil. When the water starts to boil, add a dash of olive oil to the water and then boil pasta for three minutes.

Strain pasta, then add it to your tomatoes. Add chopped basil, 1/2 of the parmesan and gently toss together.

When you serve, top each plate with the remaining parmesan, or as much as you like. Don't forget it, because this recipe contains no salt. Enjoy!

New Home, New Traditions

My parents have been renovating for months and recently moved into their new beach house. Last night we installed new cornice boxes (my husband made!) to set off my mother's gorgeous new drapes.

Don't you love the sweater? $27 at Forever 21. So anyway, my mom is just starting to decorate and I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner at her home this year, so I want to bring a color scheme to the table that feels elegant and warm, yet fitting for the beach.

Tip: Never drink wine and drill at the same time. Not my glass people!

Last year I hosted an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. This year, I want glamour!

I'm all about my these deep red roses with gold trim. They remind me of the decadent Queen of Hearts. I'm going heavy on the reds and golds inspired by the Fall/Winter holiday Barney's catalog.

I'm going the decadent route, but it doesn't mean I'm blowing my budget. Some of my best finds have been at Home Depot, CVS and Big Lots.
